3rd Period (1966 - 73)

‘the psychedelic’

At the end of the 60s, Nørgård attempted to create a kind of music that opens up and expands consciousness, looking inwards towards peaceful, undramatic micro-worlds and allowing the ear to focus on the tiniest nuances. The inner journey which is the theme of this 'mood music' is reflected in the titles of several works from this period.

Style & technique:

The musical material was expanded by the use of micro-intervals, overtones and juxtaposed phases, and Nørgård's work on the perspectives opened up by the melodic infinity series really began to take shape.

Important works:

• Grooving for piano

• Iris for orchestra

• Luna for orchestra

• Voyage into the golden screen for chamber orchestra

• Waves for percussion

• Dreamscape and In-scape for string quartet
