The Naiads holds in many ways a special position within Per Nørgård's oeuvre. In the first place, it is a taped, electronic work, and secondly the purpose of it is in the direction of spiritual development. Nonetheless, the work was performed for the first time in 1987 at the Numus Festival, the Mecca of new composer music, not exactly as concert music as such, but more as ambient music (see below). The Naiads was also conceived to accompany an exhibition of Naja Salto's works (Najads!), consisting of woven pieces using a wave motif, but this exhibition was abandoned.

The work has been published on a cassette by the Fønix Music Press under the title of Expanding Space Vol. 1. The first section of The Naiads is on side one of the tape, and the second section on side two. Each part lasts 30 minutes. Expanding Space Vol. 2 contains From the Ever More Distant Stars - Light Awakening on side one, and Night of Splendour on side two. This second part of the published work is also electronic, and is related to spiritual development. To add to the confusion, From the Ever More Distant Stars also bears the title Expanding Space.

River nymphs...

In Greek mythology, Naiad(e)s were tutelary spirits of springs and rivers. The title carries us into the realm of the supernatural, the fantastic; of water and the feminine principle...
What games are the Naiads playing with us?
